“Resurrection and eternal life are the themes of this Gaither Homecoming Easter-time special taped at sites around the Holy Land. From a boat on the Sea of Galilee to the Garden of Gethsemane, the life of Jesus Christ is celebrated in songs such as “The Mighty One of Israel,” (Bekki Smith), “Bethlehem, Galilee” (Russ Taff) and “Can’t Stop Talkin’ About Him” (Gaither Vocal Band) and “Peace Be Still.” The promise of the resurrection is heralded in “Jerusalem” (The Hoppers) and “Resurrection” (Guy Penrod), but it is Larnelle Harris’ awe-inspired “I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked” which gives the travelogue-in-song its meaning. Charlotte Ritchie’s “Next Time We Meet,” with David’s city at night as her stage, has as it’s underpinning, the traditional Jewish salutation, “Next year in Jerusalem,” an appropriate punctuation for a special that pays homage to the spiritual mecca of people of faith the world over.>”

With a history as ancient as that of humankind, the Holy Land contains an unparalleled wealth of archaeological ruins and monuments. Divided into chapters focusing on Jerusalem, North Israel, South Israel, Mount Sinai, and Jordan, this meticulously researched handbook explores vivid symbols of Jewish heritage like Masada and Tiberias and guides readers through such varied sites as the rock-cut city of Petra in Jordan, Megiddo-the supposed site of Armageddon, and St. Catherine’s Monastery, the smallest Greek orthodox diocese in the world, delving into the highlights of each site’s history and architecture. With a historic survey at the beginning of the book outlining the significant epochs and detailed photographs and plans throughout, this is an indispensable reference for the archaeologically minded traveler.

Journeys to Jerusalem: Troubling Times in a Holy Land

Journeys to Jerusalem: Troubling Times in a Holy Land

The Rev. Daphne Grimes, an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Wyoming, has had a long history of increasing exposure to North Africa and the Middle East, living for seven years in the 1960′s in Tunisia and Libya, and traveling widely through Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. Trips to Israel began in 1956. After a hiatus of many years during her life with her geophysicist husband in the Arab world, she returned again to the Holy Land in the early 1980′s, as she was preparing for the priesthood. The spiritual, emotional and experiential depth of her many visits since then, as prospects of peace seemed ever-more-fleeting, inspired her to use her journals to tell a story not often heard in the United States, in the hopes that true justice for all peoples concerned might be seen as essential for peace to ever prevail. Peace in Jerusalem could become a symbol for a hurting world. Daphne Grimes is a poet and artist. Her two published books of poems are Journeys in the Spirit and Journeys in Time and Space.
